I am really curious about what other teachers use to “get grades” for the marking period. Our school uses traditional, numerical grading. The language arts grade is a combination of reading, writing and spelling. In just focusing on the reading portion, we use AR (which I do not like), 2 projects, a reading journal and then any other grades that we might have from strategy sheets, homework, other assignments, etc. I want to totally revamp my grading next year so that it is more reflective of the student’s ability. I am planning on using Keene’s Assessing Comprehension Thinking Strategies and converting rubric scores and using that as a way to show growth, but I am not sure how I am going to compile “enough grades” for our report cards. I have loved the ideas of recording students and using rubrics and definitely plan on using recordings to assess student’s work in book clubs. What I want to know is how much assessment do you do? We have PowerSchool which means our parents can continually monitor grades via the interent. We therefore have to continually update our grades. Anybody want to share how you get your reading grades? Especially for 5th grade or upper elementary/middle school. I really want to develop a better system and I am looking for anything to help move in that direction! Rebecca/NJ/5th
