I think the question was ... How does dyslexia affect Comprehension? What strategies work best in helping students that may suffer from this condition? I am looking for activities that would be useful at the early elementary level. Kathleen Ernewein > >WSU Student
I have found that with older students it does affect comprehension quite a bit. These dylexic students struggled with word recognition and therefore do not get much meaning from the text. I have also found that reversals do not seem to affect comprehension much. When working with these students you must teach using as many modalities as you can. You teach to the students strength be it visual, auditory or tactile. Working one on one or in a small group helps these students too. My experience is that not too many students are labeled dyslexic for many reasons and usually not in the early grades. But there are programs, such as Orton-Gillingham, that seem to help these students. Mary IL/sped/8 _________________________________________________________________ Booking a flight?
