Hi,
I start with "Journey" by Patricia MacClaclan" (sp?), then I get a feel for my
class: their personality, interests, needs, and genre(s) they've not
experienced before. I always keep the read aloud a level or 2 above my best
reader because children's auditory comprehension is better than their reading
comp. (4th grade)
For writing workshop, I usually start with picture books that jog memories so
that they start a collection of ideas in their writer's notebooks to choose
from. I also use Ralph Fletcher's Live Writing. Some titles are "Tales of a
Gambling Grandma", "Nothing Ever Happens on 90th St", Earrings, and others I
can't remember the titles of (I'm at home right now). Hope this helps a bit.
