Have any of you read Sandra Wilde's What's a Schwa Sound Anyway? I found it very helpful in understanding what is and is NOT useful in the teaching of phonetics, phonics and spelling. And I have distinct memories of being moved from the top reading group to the middle reading group in second grade because I didn't understand the schwa sound (still don't, by the way). I read it because the title spoke to me, but I think it should be, "Who the He?? Cares About the Schwa Sound?"
