My kids are having a great time visualizing with music and along with my
read-aloud of Charlotte's Web. We've all seen the play together on the
field trip and have started the cartoon movie. Some of them have seen the
live action movie as well. We've even read another story about a farm
recently so we have lots of schema to build on.

At our school's reading night a couple of weeks ago, the reading coach and
I did a parent workshop on comprehension strategies. To explain
inferring, I modified Tanny's "trash theif" lesson. "My neighbors were
really noisy this past weekend! I couldn't even concentrate while reading
my book. I was nosy and tried to figure out what they were doing but
their fence is high and I couldn't see over it. Luckily for me, today is
TRASH DAY!! On my way to school, I noticed this bag. Will you help me
figure out what they were doing? Let's look at these clues. Here's a
soda wrapper (from a 2 L bottle). Here's part of a pizza box (Little
Ceasar's proof of purchase). What were they doing? (Allow time for
response.) Interesting...maybe that was it....Let's look at some more
clues. A fake mustache? A broken pair of spooky glasses? A little
pumpkin?"
By this point everyone could guess they were having a Halloween party. It
worked out great too because we did it about one week before Halloween and
I gathered all of the items at my own family's Halloween party!
