I'm going to have a large picture of the ocean, with a person swimming or
snorkling on top (skimming) and then a deep sea diver. This will show my
students that there's a time and place for different types of reading.

Another thing I do with my students is to show them that they're doing what
"deep" readers do. I take everyone's picture the first day of school, laminate
it,and tape a magnetic square on the back. Then, on my metal heater, I have
8x11 pieces of paper with various reading strategies, like "put a picture in
your head" "make a connection" "look for a little word inside" and others. As
a child is reading and does one of these strategies, I have him/her move his
picture to the strategy he just used. This metacognition is very important,
and now I have other students noticing when someone uses reading strategies. A
child can only move once during the 30-minute period they're in my room,
otherwise I'd have kids moving all over the place. This little extra movement
also helps get some of the wiggles out of some students!
