I have also changed my wording to deep readers and explained to my students that they are all "good" readers. They have really seemed to grab hold of this concept on run with it. They have actually come up with a silly hand motion to go with it. I love your picture idea with the students. I just wish I had some wall space to fit it in. I think the swimming idea is great. If you create it on the computer can you post it. I am a lousy artist!

This will show my students that there's a time and place for different types of reading. Another thing I do with my students is to show them that they're doing what "deep" readers do. I take everyone's picture the first day of school, laminate it,and tape a magnetic square on the back. Then, on my metal heater, I have 8x11 pieces of paper with various reading strategies, like "put a picture in your head" "make a connection" "look for a little word inside" and others. As a child is reading and does one of these strategies, I have him/her move his picture to the strategy he just used. This metacognition is very important, and now I have other students noticing when someone uses reading strategies. A child can only move once during the 30-minute period they're in my room, otherwise I'd have kids moving all over the place.
