We have Carl Anderson coming to our school. He is the author of "How's It
Going" and "Assessing Writers". We were having a conversation about voice.
His suggestion was that the children add a reaction to what they have written.
For example: a fact... Beavers build their dams and lodges using the same
materials. Isn't that something! (This is a second grade example).
I modeled taking facts from an encyclopedia.
Then I modeled how I would write my draft.
As I wrote the facts into sentences I added my voice (feelings, reactions,
etc.)
Of course we talked about not doing this too much but just enough to make
ourselves come through.
Hope this helps.
