oops I do have a good resource but it is poo-pooed by many.... that is
Ginn's old "Literature Works". When we moved to reading workshop these
anthologies
were promptly collected and thrown out..... I have a class set of four books
each for first grade and a class set of two books each for second... The
reason district got rid of them is because the manual is set up like a basal
approach... and they don't look like guided readers but if you "see" beyond
that... you get a ready made set of wonderful trade books (though not leveled)
that reflect a gradient (which you can match to levels using your teacher
smarts) and read like real books because that's what they are ... trade books!
Kids can start with them right in September because the selections are strongly

repetitive with lots of picture support.... as they move up... the stories
become longer and are filled with teachable moments... for goodness sakes... in

book four at the first grade level you find Angela Johnson's story, "The
Leaving Morning" ... sound familiar from Lucy's units????? I would never start
all the kids in the same place nor would I assign texts... but the kids use
them in self-selected reading and I use these books in combination with lots
of
other texts to do guided reading lessons with.... talk about a cost saver....
so why then am I covering them up ( brown paper book jackets) so
administration does not notice? It's not the culture of our school.. but it
works so
well with my first graders.... I never have a kid complain about these
stories.... and they seem to know where they belong without disgrace... there
is
not b/c level... but early reader tend to gravitate to Book 1 and are truly
proud of themselves when they can read "harder and harder" as they call texts
from that Book 1. Every story can be used with a comprehension strategy....

I hope others of you will write about your experiences with early leveled
texts so I can firm up my library.
