I have used and advocate a similar "vocab tracker"; I call mine a
Language Log. It's a bookmark for students to mark words they come
across that they don't know. Using CSSR (Context, Structure, Sound, and
Reference), they mark next to the word either a letter showing which
technique helped them discover a logical meaning, or just a check that
using the strategy in some way helped them figure out the word. Words
they don't "get" become their word study for the week.

I have my students, all year, record words from their reading on
a bookmark
called a vocab tracker. They then choose five words a week to
take a quiz
on. I have a flash card game that I got from a cooperative
learning
workshop, it ends with a quiz the students take. If you are
interested,
please e-mail me off line and I will send you the specific
directions for
        the co-op flash card game.
