You can also use the basals for shared reading.  Some of them have good
stories that are useful for modeling strategic comprehension activity.  Also
some may have some decent nonfiction to use for shared reading.

I don't know what grade you teach, but I can tell you what I used to do in
first grade with a Scott Foresman basal.  We just "had to use them somehow,"
so this is it -- I taught the kids how to read using trade books and every
now and then during the year each child read the anthologies right straight
through on his/her own.  They liked the pictures and the "heft" of the book
and the stories were worth one read-through for sure.  Not worth what we
spent on them, but probably worth the brief time it took on the children's
part.
