You can also use the basals for shared reading. Some of them have good stories that are useful for modeling strategic comprehension activity. Also some may have some decent nonfiction to use for shared reading. Mary M. 1st gr./TX

I don't know what grade you teach, but I can tell you what I used to do in first grade with a Scott Foresman basal. We just "had to use them somehow," so this is it -- I taught the kids how to read using trade books and every now and then during the year each child read the anthologies right straight through on his/her own. They liked the pictures and the "heft" of the book and the stories were worth one read-through for sure. Not worth what we spent on them, but probably worth the brief time it took on the children's part. > Date: Fri, 22 Feb 2008 19:58:13 -0500> From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [email protected]> Subject: [MOSAIC] Basal in Readers Workshop?> > Hi everyone,> > My administrator decided in the beginning of the year that it was okay for> us to forgo our purchased basal series (Open Court) and only use> literature in our readers workshop (woo hoo!!).
