I wouldn't teach nonsense words just to improve DIBELS scores and DIBELS tests
them to determine a student's understanding of phonics. A strong understanding
of sound and spelling patterns will go a long way to help the older students
get through some tough words later on. I like to think of DIBELS as a screening
tool more than an assessment. It let's me know which kids need to be looked at
more closely. I do teach nonsense syllables, and stress the syllable concept
because kids are likely to encounter them in real words. It seems like we teach
kids individual sounds then expect them to jump right to whole words which is
fine if we only read single syllable words. But its those "big" words that get
to my Title 1 kiddos. I spend a couple of minutes with fluency work - mostly
timing them on speed reading random syllables- and I have seen a big
improvement in fluency. I hope that all makes sense

What are you thoughts about teaching nonsense words in isolation---just so kids
will do well on the dibels test?
