Thank you for the tip, I managed to get a school colleague to lend me a copy :)

I read one of your other postings, titled Family and Literacy, and you wrote
about a program you will be implementing in the fall where the children will
take home games to get their families involved. I was thinking planning an
assignment that would be a take home so the children could work with their
family members. For the assignment, I had thought it would be cool to have the
children (1st/2nd grade), with the participation of their families, make a
story book about their family, or home life, or about something they do
together, ect. I thought this approach was good because you can have one
student who goes away to Florida to visit grandma, so they can write a short
story about that and include pictures, and you can have another child who's
family comes from S.Korea, so they can write about how their culture and share
pictures as well. Each child is preparing to share something about themselves
and their family and I this would be a good way to
build relationships and learn new things.

I would want to make this a really fun, creative and somewhat easy take home
assignment. My concerns are:
-Should I make a checklist for the parents and the child of what should be
included (drawn pictures by the child as well as real pictures, text in the
child's own words)
-is this assignment reasonable - what if I have a child who's home life is not
stable? I would not want to embarrass them because they don't have a storybook
done (I would want the children to show everyone their book and talk a little
about it, then i would place them on a table or reading section for anyone to
read).

 suggestions?

Subject: [MOSAIC] Creating a plan for family involvement in literacy

Good afternoon,

My name is Eunice and I am a graduate student at the College of New Rochelle
in New York. Currently I work in HR but I am working towards my degree in
early childhood education. When I was five my family moved from Mexico City
to New York. I attended a Catholic elementary and high school and graduated
from IONA College.

I am lucky to have parents who know the importance of education and a
nurturing environment, but I know that there are many children who are not
as lucky. My dream is to open a daycare center that gives pre-school
children who come from low-income families the chance to prepare for school.
I would love to provide an environment where children can play, socialize
and learn to love learning!

I am taking LIT 501- Introduction to Literacy, and one of our assignments is
to create a plan for family involvement in literacy. I need to make a plan
to reach out to two different types of families (i.e., working class
families who are literate but may not value books or may not have time to
read with their children/families whose first language may not be English).
I must include how to communicate, what I will ask the family to do to
support the child's literacy, what will I do to make/print/send home in
order to make this work, and how will I follow up to make this a year-long
connection.

Because I am currently not in a school environment, I am looking for what
some of your experiences have been with families who may have the needs but
not the desire or time to read with their children, and families who are
immigrants and sending their children (whose primary language may not be
English) to school for the first time.

Any advice/ideas are greatly appreciated!!!

~ Eunice
