I have taught grades K-3. I taught Kindergarten for 4 years. What was helpful
to me was to see who could write their name and knew the letters in their name.
The other suggestion about a name study is excellent. My school always did a
preassessment to see what the students knew coming to kindergarten-recite the
alphabet, count 1-20, colors, shapes, rhyming words, beginning and ending
sounds, wrote name, identify name, identify uppercase/lowercase letters. Many
of the activities that I used in the classroom were introduced in centers and
then my county would assess the students 3 times a year. This is how we could
determine who needed what help in small groups and how to differentiate within
the small groups.
