Jumping in on this conversation so I may be repeating something (sorry)...

I've been thinking about doing something similar in my district, but have the
students nominate the text. And since it is a small district inviting the
community to join us in reading it.

So students could read books and nominate in the fall. Then publicize the
winning book to the community in early spring as the 'student's choice'
selection for 2009. I've toyed with the idea of inviting each school level
(middle, elementary, high school) nominate one book and then publicize those in
the community. It would be relatively easy to get some community sponsors to
help out with the project.
