Without knowing the student its hard to say but Instead of "punishing" him
perhaps you should have taken a positive approach. Give him kudos for doing
work....display, praise, etc.  He may have been bored. Find what interest
him and include it in whatever his work is. Make a big deal about another
student who is  doing their work.  Positive strokes goes a
loooooooooonnnnnnnnnnngggggg way :)
