Bill, The thing of it is this: these children are level 40 and 44's and capable of not only reading the text but discussing it at an extremely high level yet they are restricted to "short" text. I would like to find the research that supports this (if it exists). I certainly understand the use of short text for modeling and guiding readers. These readers are past that stage..and the policy is a one-size-fits-all-no-differentiation policy. I am completely opposed to it and looking for support. Leslie
The thing of it is this: If they can't read a short text, they won't be able to read a longer one. Why waste valuable time on a long work if the child won't be able to understand it? Start small and work up. Again, this is not an "all sizes fits all" kind of teaching, but you're gonna have to differentiate your teaching based on the needs of the students. Some are going to need smaller texts, some are capable of reading WAR AND PEACE ---- know which ones are which.
