I use the mini-lesson once a week or so for the read aloud. I feel no guilt about it. I read the book, ask the kids what they think, and move on. Then I refer back to the reads throughout the year. I read Patricia Polacco first thing every year. I spend several weeks with her books. I tell the kids these are the "Masters" and we refer to them all year. Kim
