Here's what we have been working on since spring break. My second grade students are sitting in learning neighborhoods (five groups).
1. For our weekly basal work groups make their own mind map of the building background topic as a group. This week the topic is cowboys. Then all groups share info and it is added to an Inspiration document that we all can see. 2. For vocabulary development I took one of their words and modeled writng a definition of it by using the context in the Vocab. Power (from basal) and the glossary. Then I wrote a sentence that gave meaning to the word. Each group then needed to do the same with a different word from the lesson. 3. Groups read the selection after doing a picture walk. (I modeled doing the summary plan and paragraph using a previous story from the basal.) 4. Groups wrote a summary plan for the story noting the 5 Ws and How. 5. Using the plan groups wrote a summary paragraph. It is my hope that the groups will be able to do the plan and paragraph with independence using next week's story. My long term goal is that the kids will be able to view some of the book recommendations from the end of Reading Rainbow shows and do something like that in their groups. I think I will be teaching the idea of giving the gist of a story along with adding personal voice. That's what I am doing to teach comprehension while changing up the day to day routine as we get crazy with the last two months of school. Any advice or suggestions are welcome.
