Join the club. I think we are absolutely killing reading with our zeal to teach strategies. I am a voracious reader and I was not taught any specific strategies. I was exposed to good literature and I had friends with whom I still talk about books thirty years later. I know struggling readers need explicit instruction and everyone needs a level of exposure, but I really think we are going above and beyond. Reading should be exciting and purposeful. The first book I am reading this summer is Readicide.
