In my building, I would say 100%. But it isn't always about reading a
professional book, or taking a course.
It is about reflection, which I would say is as, or more important. A wise
mentor once reminded me of the importance of evaluating and assessing my
own knowledge and experience. How many times have you read a professional
book and thought I could have written this or written it better? As
teachers, we just don't have the time.

We had an end of the year celebration at our principal's home this week.
Our school is being torn down. I am feeling those feelings of the teachers in
the schools that Arne Duncan wants to close and start over. Our wonderful
building will be no more. Our wonderful staff will never be the same. There
was a TON of reflection going on at that party.

There have been a couple of responses like this, explaining a system which
requires teachers to pursue further training (above and beyond that
required for re-certification), but I think that Stephanie is asking a
fundamentally different question. I believe her question is related to how
many
teachers choose to extend their professional studies, be it self-study, group
study, etc., beyond the school year. I think this is a very different
question because it asking about an attitude towards personal, professional
growth that goes beyond the school year and beyond an district requirements.
