Oh, yeah. While Allen is a great beginning, my two absolute favorites are Responsive Literacy Coaching: Tools for Creating and Sustaining Purposeful Change by Cheryl Dozier and Coaching for Balance-How to Meet the Challenginges of Literacy Coaching by Jan Miller Burkins. I've just ordered Jan's new book from IRA: Practical Literacy Coaching and I'm so anxious for it to come. I've also liked Literacy Coaching: The Essentials by Katherine Casey and several other books as well. Lyons' and Pinnell's Systems for Change in Literacy Education is an outstanding book, but it's long on information and a bit short on inspiration, so it isn't a good first book study.
One caution: try to get as much info as you possibly can before you order a book because of the terms "literacy coach" and "reading coach" and the overlapping of the two. I actually threw out a literacy coach book I'd bought--the first time I've ever thrown out a book in my life and it was brand new! There are two general categories of coaches, I think, with lots of subsets, but the terminology isn't clear. So you may order a lit coach book thinking of a more what-I'd-call a reading coach kind of book, which might be a bit more supervisory and the word "support" might mean something that may or may not match your definition of support and it may not appeal to you at all. Or you may order a book about lit coaching that you expected to be well-organized and specific and more directive, and you may get one at the other end of the spectrum. So know who you are and what you want and make sure that's what you're ordering or you might be very surprised.
