Read The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles, by Julie Edwards (yes, it's Julie Andrews herself!) I've used it as a read aloud to third graders and fifth graders. It's definitely a journey theme- all about imagination and perseverence. And there are no illustrations in it, which is great for visualizing.
