A great one for "journeys" is Half a Moon Inn by Paul Fleishman. I second the comment about Edward Tulane--great one for learning to keep track of character and setting. Those were by far voted the two favorites by my 4th graders. They also liked Wringer--deep conversation, would save it more for the end of the year.
