I grouped very carefully, based on the end of year assessments required by our 
district and quickly modified as I worked to get to know these readers as 
people.  The assessments used in my previous district included the DRA and 
monthly running records. I also made it a point to do a running record and 
conference with every student using self-selected text within the first two 
weeks. Gave me insight into their interests as well as their abilities.
