I use the end-of-year benchmark information to help me know where to reassess each student. I find that so many kids do not read regularly across the summer that these e-o-y scores are often not valid in September. Once the results are compiled, I can then create my guided reading groups. I use the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark assessment kit. I was wondering, in the beginning of the year how do you place students into reading groups? Do you look at the previous years? test scores? Or do you just place them based on teacher observation?
