I agree with Lori.  And read On Solid Ground by Taberski for a good overall
picture of how she teaches literacy with a wide range of children....she
differentiates by doing exactly what Lori suggests.  Between immersing
yourself in rich stories by practicing teachers like Taberski and observing
and interacting with children you will build your own tapestries of
understanding.  It takes time!! And commitment.  There is no silver bullet!
