Before leaving my prior district/position, I purchased iOpeners from Scott
Foresman. They are a series of well-written nonfiction books supporting
content area themes. We (lit coaching staff) liked the quality of nonfiction
features. Since many of the students we worked with were struggling readers, or
more honestly, struggling students, the fact that we could address guided
reading needs with materials that would build background knowledge across the
curriculum was appealing. Also, the materials leveled in the lower ranges were
still visually appealing and sort of 'grown-up' looking. We felt they would be
useful for older, delayed readers because they were interesting, accessible and
not 'baby looking'. Of course, the books simply supplemented book rooms with a
wide variety of publisher resources.
