A colleague and I went to Columbia University this weekend to their Spring Reunion Day (Teachers College Reading and Writing Project- TCRWP). Lucy Calkins, et al have created "Units of Study for Teaching Reading: A Curriculum for the Reading Workshop, Grades 3-5". It will be out soon (this spring). I personally can't wait for it. Our building, which is 3-5, are in the process or trying to implement reading workshop. We, too have many who want guidance. I certainly don't blame them. I'm hoping that this will solve some of that. It's being published by Heinemann so I'm sure it's on or will be on their site. Just a thought! norma (Reading Specialist) PS Did you mention what grades are in your building?
Let us be grateful to people who make us happy, they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom. ~Marcel Proust ---------- Original Message ---------- From: "Jennifer Lyon" <[email protected]> To: "Mosaic: A Reading Comprehension Strategies Email Group" <[email protected]> Subject: [MOSAIC] Reading textbook suggestions Date: Wed, 24 Mar 2010 15:17:05 -0500 My school is looking at updating the current reading textbook that we have (HM), there are 3 of us on staff (out of 7) that don't use the book now and would rather use the money to buy more books for our limited book room. For some of our staff I understand they are uncomfortable teaching reading with out a textbook with lesson plans, it does take more work. So my question for you all is those of you that have to use a textbook any suggestions as to ones we should look at, any we should avoid? Does anyone use the Great Source Day Books or the Reader's Handbook instead of a textbook series? These sounded like they would easily fit in to use as mini lessons for Readers workshop. I am also looking for information on Spelling (1-6) and Phonics (k-2 use phonics), if we go with a book that doesn't have spelling and phonics with it we will have to get separate materials. Any suggestions of programs out there? In the upper grades we have a spelling book but we (5-6) would love to look into something different we have (HM older series before 2000 I think). I suppose it would help to tell you we are a K-6 school with one class of each and about 88 students. Any information would be appreciated Thanks Jennifer Lyon St.Mary School, WI _______________________________________________ Mosaic mailing list [email protected] To unsubscribe or modify your membership please go to http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org.
