My school is looking at updating the current reading textbook that we have (HM), there are 3 of us on staff (out of 7) that don't use the book now and would rather use the money to buy more books for our limited book room. For some of our staff I understand they are uncomfortable teaching reading with out a textbook with lesson plans, it does take more work. So my question for you all is those of you that have to use a textbook any suggestions as to ones we should look at, any we should avoid? Does anyone use the Great Source Day Books or the Reader's Handbook instead of a textbook series? These sounded like they would easily fit in to use as mini lessons for Readers workshop. I am also looking for information on Spelling (1-6) and Phonics (k-2 use phonics), if we go with a book that doesn't have spelling and phonics with it we will have to get separate materials. Any suggestions of programs out there? In the upper grades we have a spelling book but we (5-6) would love to look into something different we have (HM older series before 2000 I think). I suppose it would help to tell you we are a K-6 school with one class of each and about 88 students.
