I had retelling success with some struggling first graders by tying it to a concrete physical movement. I taught them to 'tell the story across their fingers'. Characters are the 'thumb'. Beg. Middle and end of the story were the next three fingers. The pinky varied depending on the strategy we were studying at the time Visualization, connections etc. We practiced over and over during individual conferences and partner reading. Students referred to an anchor chart in the classroom until they internalized the procedure. It also carried over to writing as they used it to plan for writing personal narratives.
