This is for Renee Keller who asked for help with finding writing mentor texts. Go to schoolwidefundamentals.com They have some great resources and some free samples on their website. I also bought a book from Stenhouse called, Mentor Texts: Teaching Writing Through Children's Literature, K-6. This book has a wealth of ideas.

For some of our staff I understand they are uncomfortable teaching reading with out a textbook with lesson plans, it does take more work. So my question for you all is those of you that have to use a textbook any suggestions as to ones we should look at, any we should avoid? Does anyone use the Great Source Day Books or the Reader's Handbook instead of a textbook series? These sounded like they would easily fit in to use as mini lessons for Readers workshop. I am also looking for information on Spelling (1-6) and Phonics (k-2 use phonics), if we go with a book that doesn't have spelling and phonics with it we will have to get separate materials. Any suggestions of programs out there? In the upper grades we have a spelling book but we (5-6) would love to look into something different we have (HM older series before 2000 I think). I suppose it would help to tell you we are a K-6 school with one class of each and about 88 students. Lucy Calkins, et al have created "Units of Study for Teaching Reading: A Curriculum for the Reading Workshop, Grades 3-5". It will be out soon (this spring). I personally can't wait for it. Our building, which is 3-5, are in the process or trying to implement reading workshop. We, too have many who want guidance. I certainly don't blame them. I'm hoping that this will solve some of that. It's being published by Heinemann so I'm sure it's on or will be on their site. Just a thought! norma (Reading Specialist) PS Did you mention what grades are in your building? Great ideas. The graphic organizer is Vicki Benson's: the top of the page is the 'beginning'- it has an inverted triangle (left angle is character, right angle is setting, bottom angle is the problem). The problem/kickoff is what drives the story and leads to the middle, the events. Just below that point of the triangle is a square where I have put 1. 2. 3. 4. down the left side to remind them that the events are in sequence, and at the bottom of the box are the cohesive ties). Just below the box is a circle, the end/solution. The kids suggested I put a smiley face in the circle because the character is happy that the problem was solved. Make sense? m. ------------------------------ Message: 8 Date: Wed, 24 Mar 2010 21:50:13 -0400 From: "Diane Baker" <[email protected]> To: "Mosaic: A Reading Comprehension Strategies Email Group" <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [MOSAIC] Reading textbook suggestions Message-ID: <fddfcaa0c3403342a6c470429948dacd033b4...@r14exch03.r14.r14root.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Does look like something we could use? I taught them to 'tell the story across their fingers'. Characters are the 'thumb'. Beg. Middle and end of the story were the next three fingers. The pinky varied depending on the strategy we were studying at the time Visualization, connections etc. We practiced over and over during individual conferences and partner reading. Students referred to an anchor chart in the classroom until they internalized the procedure. It also carried over to writing as they used it to plan for writing personal narratives.
