I would look closely at my daily routines.  Interactive writing is powerful in 
short spurts. I think kids tire of it when it goes on too long.

I also really liked to use interactive writing in small groups to model written 
retelling.  The retelling can be cut into smaller chunks and group members can 
illustrate to create story maps.  I think that this book is absolutely the best 
when it comes to interactive writing:
