In reading logs they had to note things they would want to check as historically accurate, they had to note incidents where characters shared different perspectives on the war, and then the usual comprehension type entries....questions, visualizations, important quotes etc.
We also read Johnny Tremain, a variety of books by the Colliers sharing African American experiences of the revolution, a good book by Avi - forget the name.....
