Sara,
I am just catching up on some Mosaic posts - now that school is out... I
don't have a book to recommend, other than maybe some articles in the
Reading Journal, or Reading Recovery by Marie Clay texts... I did have
experience with a child that spoke in vowel sounds when I (in the Title 1
role) started working with him as a first grader. He had been in speech for
kindergarten and sporadically attended before attending kindergarten. I
started a Reading Recovery program (unofficially) with him, reading lots of
books to him first, having him join in when possible, building on his
writing and reading vocabulary at the same time. We also started his own
alphabet book right away - a chance for him to come up with his own anchor
pictures. We referred to it very regularly for most of the year when reading
and writing. I worked closely with the speech path - working with books that
built on appropriate lang. structures for him, (avoiding structures that he
didn't need to practice) and that were accessible to him - knowing how to
help him make sounds, how much to expect him to do, etc....and wrote lots of
stories practicing similar structures, as well as reminding him to use all
the sounds as he spoke - so it sounded/said what the author wanted.
It took all year, but he managed to make benchmark by the end of first grade
- and after testing him a couple weeks ago, he continued to grow as a
reader/writer, even though I was not able to work with him this year.
My recommendation to you is to share lots of books so your child is very
comfortable with book language/structures, as you expect him/her to take on
some of those chores - make them books that they can access - even if you
have to write the books yourself, so they see themselves as readers - and go
from there! Don't forget the alphabet book!!! If you haven't made them
before - I use 5X8 notecards - punched on a side - so it is held together
with rings (yarn when I give it to them to keep), left page is a written
example of upper case and lower case, right page is a picture (sticker,
drawing or cut out glued on) chosen by the child (from choices predetermined
by you!) of one or two things that begin with that sound -so child will see
Bb, pic.of book/bell/bee?, you have that for each letter - and if needed
pages for th,ch,wh... whatever your child needs. Start with letters you know
the child knows, then add sounds they can access, and others as you teach
them. (Lightbulbs suddenly came on when my little guy suddenly realized that
there was a symbol that went with those sounds people were bugging him to
use!!)
Good luck! Feel free to email me at the gmail address above if you have any
questions.
Beth
