At this point many of you have received and read a message from a member about some medical problems in the UK. This is BOGUS SPAM - ignore it.
This is an example of vicious spam that was propagated through our list by a totally unsuspecting member. I would hope that most of you realized that this message was NOT legitimate and then deleted it right away. I also understand that some of your spam software may have rejected the message outright so you never saw it. Unfortunately, the message was posted to the list without the knowledge of the poster. I'm mostly disappointed with myself as I had turned off moderation about 6 hours prior to the release of this message. I've just returned the list to emergency moderation to protect everyone from "turn around" on the spam on the UK medical message. Some of you may have already seen that a reply message from you was rejected from our server. That said (whew), YOU MUST ALWAYS BE VIGILANT in screening messages. If a message seems out of character and asking for your help, then delete it. I'm seeing more and more of these sort of (ahem) innocent postings. I don't like the option of moderating the list, but it will keep this sort of "SPAM" from being forwarded to our valuable members. If you think your email has sent spam, just check your sent messages to see what has recently been sent from your account. LIST PROTECTION As you may know, our list does NOT allow attachments and also does NOT allow HTML email. This means that the email sent to you from the list cannot infect your computer. HOWEVER, if you click on a link or reply to someone, we cannot be responsible for results from these sorts of actions. BE VIGILANT Do not be afraid to delete any message...you haven't won the lottery in some foreign country, your monetary donation will not save a person or the entire world, and you don't need to click a URL to see a web page with fantastic discounts on prescription drugs. A general tip-off to spam is bad grammar/spelling and sentence structure - something I hope that our list would notice in a second. MODERATION WILL CONTINUE I will likely keep moderation on for a while due to problems that I'm seeing with spam issues. I know that this delays messages and interaction with our community. You may not know, but I had to put myself on permanent moderation in the last year as someone has "spoofed" my email and was sending spam to the list posing as me. What that means is that when I send a message, I must also approve my own messages (welcome to my world of spam?!?!). So always, be careful and delete anything suspicious even if it is from a trusted source. If you ever need questions answered or just need advice, please do not hesitate to email me off-list.
