Our district used the units of study, both primary and intermediate exclusively
for a few years and then continued the model and adapted to our Core Curriculum
Content Standards for New Jersey. I attended the summer Institute for Writer's
Workshop at Columbia at the beginning of this process. My suggestion is to take
the time this summer to read each book and then map out each lesson on a two
sided form. The books take anywhere from 10-16 pages to walk you through a
lesson. They certainly are not a manual. I personal took each unit and mapped
out each lesson so that I had a quick and ready reference for each lesson. Just
one month of following her lessons and you will know your students as writers
better than you ever did before. It is amazing how you think you know each
students' strength and weakness until you really sit beside them and talk about
their writing. The first book is extremely important because she walks you
through the lessons of establishing the routines and structure that will be
your writer's workshop. It is WORTH EVERY CENT!! You will benefit and so will
your students.

Subject: Re: [MOSAIC] Units of Study for Primary Writing

Our school has used the Units of Study for Primary Writing fairly extensively.
It is designed for K-2, so there can be difficulties if all three grades are
trying to use it. I find it is most appropriate for grade 1, a bit of a
stretch for many of our kindergarten students, and not rigorous enough for our
2nd graders.
