Nancy,

Totally agree here.  I do have them shop and take books on their level.  They 
are allowed a free choice book though that can be anything they want to read.  
I find it keeps balance on what they are reading.  They love having that free 
choice selection.

I think for independent reading, children should be allowed to read  

whatever they want, no matter what the level. I read YA books all the time and  

LOVE them and learn from them.During independent or at home reading, I want  

children to acquire a love for reading.
