I have very similar requirements in my district. How will you reconcile your beliefs and these requirements? I am also required to have my second grade students do 1/2 hour of homework and 1/2 hour of reading (documented) at home each night. My students are ELL and most don't have anyone at home to help them with these things.

First of all let me say that I received my masters in curriculum and instruction about 10 years ago. I have personally tried and tried to keep up with all of the newest literature. I read Mosaic of Thought many years ago and have studied it in small book groups and then taught lessons on how to implement it into classrooms. I read and utilized Fountas and Pinnell in my classroom for several years, and still like parts of it and use parts of it every day. I have read Practice With Purpose and loved it. Then last summer I read Daily Five and Cafe. I loved them both. I began the Daily Five last year and the children in my fourth grade classroom loved the reading block we had. NOW right before we go back to school we are being given the following guide lines for this coming year. • Use of Houghton Mifflin as core reading program. • Exclusive use of HM materials in small group instruction (leveled readers, vocabulary readers, phonic readers, I Love Reading books, extra resources, etc.) • Instruction in sight words as identified by core reading program • Use of Phonic Readers for practice in connected text • 3-6: Every below level student reads aloud with the teacher in small group every day. • Weekly assessments grades 3-6. • Schedules reflect 4 components with adequate time. • Comprehension focus posted and taught. • Rich vocabulary instruction using posted picture cards from Santa Bonita website. • Tier 2 vocabulary from HM posted cumulatively in all classrooms. • Writing in every classroom, every day. It is as though teachers with a brain are not needed any longer. Follow the script and do what you are told. Now that I am reading the Book Whisperer, and reading all of the wonderful comments, I become more and more disallusioned. Teaching children the way they need to be taught is a many-faceted procedure. Nothing works with all children in the same way. Teachers who have researched and studied should be encouraged to use what they know works with children instead of just following along. Thanks for all the GREAT comments about this book and others. This is how we become excellent teachers! But new to much of this discussion. I saw The Sisters 2 years ago at the IRA meeting in Springfield, MO. I'm a Title I teacher part of the day and a literacy coach the other part. Got hooked onThe Daily Five about four years ago, and because of my principal and teacher's trust, we elmented Daily Five 2 years ago,and Cafe this past year. Now our whole dstrict will require Daily Five next year. Both are "how to " manuals for Best Practices in reading education. No one has the magic answer, but there are many good rsources out there. I like the Sisters because they are truly teaching and use their thories and ideas every day. For us, in a rather small, highpoverty school district, it seems to work so far. We'll see what our test results are in the fall. On Fri, Jul 23, 2010 at 1:43 PM, Robert Kolvek <[email protected]> wrote: > Hi, > > I teach first grade.
