This is a great time for my question. But first some background. . I
used the ideas of the required book genre last year with my 8th grade
English classes. I wasn’t sure about naming a number but I tried it. In
our middle school we have 90 minute blocks. So instead of having the
students for entire year I only have them for a semester. I arranged
the book requirement to be 20 books using similar requirements that
Donalyn has in her classroom. This went well and most students met
requirements without a problem. Of course number of books was not
graded (this was a HUGE thing for the students and parents—so glad I
didn’t have that as a battle).

Anyways, I will be teaching 7th grade reading this year and my classes
will only be a quarter long along with 90 minutes daily. FINALLY the
question: How many books should be required? The quarter will be 9 weeks
and I thought about 12 books just to push it a bit.

I’d love any feedback.

Thanks,
Rhonda

When you have your kids in a self-contained setting, unlike donalyn, you
