Kim,I am a literacy coach and reading teacher. I have been incorporating both guided reading and a basal for quite some time. It is actually a good mix. Sometimes, I teach from the basal and use it to focus on reading strategies and vocabulary. I look at the state standards that students are required to meet and go to the basal and look for material that can support meeting those objectives. I also incorporate literature groups and teach guided reading through those groups. Here, I am able to work on higher level thinking and questioning as well as on building fluency, and accountable talk. The variety helps keep students interested and motivated and I can continually work on reading strategies using both resources. The guided reading also gives students an opportunity to write and respond to what they are reading about. I hope this was a little of what you were looking for.
