Some of my colleagues and I decided to use WTW this year. I teach 3rd.
After reading the Words Their Way, I anticipated that most of my students
would be in the Within Word Pattern stage, so I bought the book for the extra
sorts. It has worked well for all my students. There are sorts for those
students who are just entering that stage, as well as advanced sorts for the
highest group. I am only doing 3 spelling groups- any more than that would be
too much for me. I like the games on the CD and have made several of them.
The only problem that I have found is in the editing- I have found several
instances of misspelled words in the instructions that go with the games.
The CD also allows you to customize sorts and games with the word patterns
that you want to work with. I like having the sorts already created in the
additional books- it saves loads of time. I have had to make custom sorts
for my lowest group who are still struggling with CVC and CVCe patterns-
they love to add that final e to everything! Most of the conversations I have
read about WTW has been about the sorts. I was very impressed with the
initial assessments that are done in order to place students in their stages.
The way the information is broken down provides some very interesting data
that helps me to see where my students need to go next.

The Words Their Way 4th edition comes with a CD and a DVD. The word
sorts are on the CD. When you open it you have 2 options either the
Data Base, which you only download once, and the Word Sort Option on
the same opening screen.
The unfortunate part is that there is no index or list of actual
patterns for all of the sorts. You have to go to each spelling stage
and open the skills to see each sort. You don't really need any
supplemental books if you have the CD.
We love the program but this is one of the non-teacher friendly aspects
of it.

Hi there are a few sorts in the back of the book, otherwise, there are
seperate books you purchase for the sorts - there is a book for each
developmental level of speller.

Where on the CD would I find the word sorts? I've reviewed the CD and
am confused as where the sorts are located. I'm compiling levels C-E
for the 5th grade teachers...I know I must be nuts...or a good friend.
Please advise as to where I find the sorts. Thanks, Sonny
