Chapter 8 describes professional learning communities and a process for writing 
common, formative assessments. An effective PLC cycle:
1. Identifies what students will know and be able to do
2. Writes the common, formative assessment that will find out if the students 
learned what they were supposed to learn
3. Develops top-notch lessons and strategies that will teach the skills (in 20 
minutes)
4. Identifies the common, formative assessment dates
5. Analyzes the results by teacher/class
6. Identifies which students "got it" and which students did not "get it."
7. Develops a reteaching plan

We also are required to have common assessments, but they only one per grade 
level given in the spring. Each grade level K-5 administers a written response 
to a content area prompt. While we do teach comprehension strategies, they are 
assessed using
running records and through reading conferences.
