My problem with "just have them read" is the kids who can barely read. When
do we do direct instruction of reading strategies? I have read more reading
research papers than I care to think about that tell me to spend my time
conferencing, working on fluency, teaching comprehension strategies,
decoding with my lower level readers...and now, just have them read. Well,
that's ok for the kids who can read on their own. But lately, I've been
using a lot of "Words Their Way", and I'm finding I'm making progress, but
it's taking my whole 40 minutes. I have to pull back (I'm the school reading
specialist) and insure that I'm making time for reading with them, reading
to them (and discussing what I'm reading, insuring comprehension, etc.)

I haven't read the research; I will try to. But I'm always wary of "just do
this" results, and the magic will happen.
