Thank you ALL who responded to my request.
I am going to get Uprising from the public library to read myself
during spring break. It sounds as if that book may be an addition to
my classroom library.
I already have Lyddie, and I'd like more choices for my students.

I thought of Uprising by Margaret Peterson Haddix. Very good book.

Subject: [MOSAIC] Book recommendations
Historical fiction--Lyddie came to mind immediately for me too, but since so
many other people have recommended it--I know Margaret Peterson
Haddix wrote a
historical fiction novel based around the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory
fire. I
haven't read it, but I love everything by Margaret Peterson Haddix,
so I would
expect it's worth looking into. Also, I think Gary Paulsen has written some
historical fiction books, hasn't he? True North by Kathryn Lasky about the
Underground Railroad. Bandit's Moon takes place in California during
the Gold
Rush and raises some interesting ideas about stereotypes.
Sci fi--The Green Book is the story of a group of people who leave
Earth (before
an implied disaster strikes the planet)--there's a lot about the
choices people
make about what to bring (especially books) and about trying to set up a new
life on a new planet. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle. My dad read
several books by Robert Heinlein to me when I was that age. Not all
his books
would be appropriate but I'm sure some would, and they definitely deal with
space.
