I always start my unit on poetry for my 4th and 5th graders by putting out a
lot of poetry books, giving them some time to read some poetry, and then asking
them to define poetry. Having a range of books solves the problem of levels,
and I think it's a question that's hard to answer, so even if kids have talked
about this before, it's a discussion that can still be valuable. Often we end
up talking about what is always true of poetry, sometimes true of poetry, and
never true of poetry. Most things kids say about poetry are only sometimes
true (ie. it rhymes, it's short)

Awakening the Heart, by Georgia Heard would also be a good book to look
through--I love her suggestions on teaching poetry.

Subject: [MOSAIC] Poetry Lesson for 4th Grade

Hi! I have a demo lesson for a 4th grade class. The only guidelines I
was given is to have a beginning/introductory lesson on poetry. I am not
exactly sure where I should start, as I have no idea what these students
have been taught, their reading levels, etc. Any ideas on how I can
tackle this task? I appreciate any/all advice you can give. Thanks!

Lauren
