Hi Natasha, I like the inquiry approach to this unit. Have you attended any workshops by Katie Wood Ray? This is how she would advocate unit studies be done, I think. I also like how you broke this down into always/sometimes/never. Will try this next time. And, I agree, asking the kids what their definition of poetry is can be deceptively simple. Having a range of books solves the problem of levels, and I think it's a question that's hard to answer, so even if kids have talked about this before, it's a discussion that can still be valuable. Often we end up talking about what is always true of poetry, sometimes true of poetry, and never true of poetry. Most things kids say about poetry are only sometimes true (ie. it rhymes, it's short) Awakening the Heart, by Georgia Heard would also be a good book to look through--I love her suggestions on teaching poetry. I have a demo lesson for a 4th grade class. The only guidelines I was given is to have a beginning/introductory lesson on poetry. I am not exactly sure where I should start, as I have no idea what these students have been taught, their reading levels, etc. Any ideas on how I can tackle this task? I appreciate any/all advice you can give. Thanks!
