Nancy Atwell's school website has great lists of books for middle schoolers.
They are generated by her students who are all involved in reading - of
course through their own interests.    You might also look at day to Day
Assessment in the reading Workshop - supposedly for 3 - 6 but I believe
works well on up.  Lots of ideas for generating student engagement and
involvement and self assessment, metacognition.
