Mary, First Steps out of Western Australia had great parent resources. I don't know if that is still published in this country and whether it has been changed over the years. The parent resource had just the sort of description you are looking for. There were also suggestions for parents about what they could do to support their child's literacy development at each stage. In fact, the curriculum had a whole book called Parents as Partners.
