I teach middle school and I have my students use 1 inch binders (spiral
notebooks tend to leave a trail of torn strips of paper and cultivated the it's
not my trash syndrome) to keep their handouts and notes organized and
composition books for their responses. At the end of the year I had my students
take out their notes and put them in folders for next school year. Many of my
students kept their composition books because they said they enjoyed reading
and sharing their responses.

Actually, a binder sounds like a good idea. I may try that next year instead
of the good old marble notebooks.

I love binders for middle school. The things that are really important
I give to them in sheet protectors- anything that they will use as a
reference for the rest of their student/academic careers. (Just in
case they don't get a WONDERFUL teacher again they will have it.) You
can set it up exactly like the F&P with loose leaf filler between. The
genre list, rules and circle discussion guide can all go in sheet
protectors

Fountas & Pinnell have created a reader's notebook which can be
purchased
online at <http://www.heinemann.com/products/E02959.aspx>
http://www.heinemann.com/products/E02959.aspx

for $6 - $8/per book.

As a 6th grade Reading teacher with 110 kids on my caseload, our
district
could never afford to purchase one per student. Alternatively, Donalyn
Miller (Book Whisperer) has her students create their own reader's
notebook
out of a 70-page single-subject spiral notebook, but it would be A LOT
of
work, with time spent numbering pages and gluing photocopies onto paper.
Time that could be better spent on mini-lessons teaching comprehension
strategies followed by uninterrupted blocks of independent reading time
with
1:1 conferencing built in.

Does anyone know of a less expensive alternative to the F&P Reader's
Notebook, i.e., other vendors who sell a similar item online? I've
included
the link so that you can view the contents of the Fountas and Pinnell
version.

Thanks!
